Salvador da Bahia
Salvador (historic name, São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos, translated to English as
"Holy Savior of All Saints' Bay." Located on the northeast coast of Brazil and
the capital of the Northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia. "Salvador is the third most populous Brazilian city, after São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and it is the ninth most populous city in Latin America." The state of Bahia has 50 km of coastline, with breathtaking beaches including the Farol de Baha and Rio Vermelho.
Over 80% of the population of metropolitan region of Salvador has some Black
African ancestry. The African influence in many cultural aspects of the city such as music, dance, cuisine, and religion, make it the center of Afro-Brazilian culture. "The historical center of Salvador, frequently called the Pelourinho, is renowned for its Portuguese
colonial architecture with historical monuments dating from the 17th through the
19th centuries and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985."

“Dancing at the Source” features a comprehensive curriculum, comprising rigorous classes in Afro Brazilian dance forms and a daily orixa song class, and a curated cultural exchange itinerary that includes visits to significant religious/spiritual/historical sites, venues featuring master performances of traditional and contemporary arts, museums exhibitions and community lectures, and other educational experiences.
Viver Brasi’s “Dancing at the Source program” is directed by the company’s founding Artistic Directors, Linda Yudin and Luiz Badaró, in an association of more than 14 years with Paula Santos, Tour guide and Executive Director of Tobossi Cultural Exchange, a cultural exchange nonprofit organization in Salvador.
Orixa Song, Afro-Brazilian Dance and Music Classes including dances of the orixas, samba de roda, bloco afro dance, dança afro and northeastern folkloric styles at the Bale Folclorico da Bahia Studio located in the Pelourinho, a United Nations’ Heritage site. Faculty comprises internationally respected masters (mestres) in traditional and contemporary Afro- Brazilian culture, including orixa song and dance experts Gilmar Sampaio and Jose Ricardo Sousa; Bloco Afro performer and scholar Vania Oliveira; Danca Afro teaching artist Tatiana Campelo; and performer and scholarof Northeastern Dances Dr. Amelia Conrado.
Visit to Ilé Axé Opo Afonja, one of the oldest Candomblé temples in Bahia, to tour the compound and meet the late Dona Detinha’s family who is carrying on the orixa doll making tradition; visit the alaka workshop where shawls and clothing are woven and crocheted; visit as well the Candomblé temples Casa Branca and Gantois.
Weekend Excursions
Viver Brasil’s “Dancing at the Source” program also includes a week-end trip to the island of Boipeba on the Atlantic Coast, with a visit to the nearby Boitacara Quilombo, which was founded more than 100 years ago by ancestors of the two extended families who currently live on the land; travel to the Boa Morte Festival in Cachoeira; and travel to Saubara for a Samba Party with the Saubara Youth Ensemble, a program that’s received formal recognition by the United Nations as a one of Brazil’s Cultural Patrimony sites.
Classes with Rosangela Silvestre and Silvestre Faculty
Week 2 and 3 participants will have a full schedule of dance classes within the Silvestre Training Intensive. Participants will work with Rosangela Silvestre Choreographer, instructor, dancer and creator of the Silvestre Dance Technique. Rosangela is a native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Dance and post-graduated
specializing in choreography, achieving her degree from the Federal University
of Bahia (UFBA). She has researched dance and music in Brazil, India, Egypt,
Senegal and Cuba as part of her ever-evolving and eclectic palette of movement.
She acquired training in such diverse techniques as: Martha Graham, Limón, Horton, Floor Bar, Classic Ballet, Dunham Technique, and has experienced diverse dance expressions - such as Germany Theater Dance, Contemporary, Folkloric, as well as Traditional dances of Africa and other continents.
Classes will be held at the Funaҫão Cultural no Estado da Bahia’s Escola de Danҫa and at the Vila Velha Theatre. Classes include Silvestre Technique, dance Capoeira, Afro-Brazilian Orixa, Ballet, Simbology, Dance Composition.
